Poverty is measured using Statistics Canada's LICOs (1992 base). "Elderly" refers to people aged 65 years and over.
Reading this table
Example: The poverty rate among people over the age of 65 dropped considerably between 1980 and 1995. In 1985, 34% of the elderly were living in poverty; in 1995, 18.7% were below the poverty line. [This was due primarily to changes in social programs aimed at reducing poverty among the elderly.]
