Poverty is measured using Statistics Canada LICOs, 1992 base. "Elderly" refers to persons aged 65 and older. "Elderly in families" refers to those persons living with spouses and/or other family members.

Reading this table

Example: The poverty rate among elderly persons dropped significantly between 1980 and 1995. However, unattached elderly persons (those not living with spouses or other family members) remained quite vulnerable to poverty. Almost half of them (45.1%) lived below the poverty line in 1995, compared to 6.9% of those who lived in families.
