On June 12, the Government of Quebec tabled a bill in the National Assembly aimed at establishing a strategy for poverty reduction in the province. This is a major step as Quebec takes the lead in putting poverty back on the public (and legislative) agenda.
Preliminary impressions are that the scope and timelines of the proposed legislation fall well short of the recommendations put forward by the Collective for a law on the elimination of poverty, as featured in our September 2000 edition of Perception
However, it would be premature for us to comment on the details of the bill in the absence of further information and without regard for the players involved. More information and analysis is needed.
CCSD’s next steps
Our researchers are currently carrying out their analysis of the draft legislation and related documents. We are also paying close attention to reactions from organizations involved in the process as set out in the legislation. In the coming months, we will be responding in the media and through our website. We will also be doing a follow-up article on the Collective and its reaction to the government’s actions, in an upcoming edition of Perception.
