Step-mothers: Exploring the Myth

(by Kati Morrison and Airdrie Thompson-Guppy, with Patricia Bell, 1986, 150 pp., #112, $15.00)

By masquerading as a natural mother, a stepmother acts like any member of a minority group who is striving to conform. And if she accepts society's edict that she be a surrogate mother, she often ends up being everybody's scapegoat instead. Knowing the ropes, however, can lead to successful adjustments for all concerned.

For too long, the challenges, problems and rewards of stepmothering have been misunderstood, or simply ignored. Now two mental health professionals, who are themselves stepmothers, have drawn on more than two decades of professional experience in an instructive and clear discussion of stepmothering.

Stepmothers: Exploring the Myth is a practical guide for stepmothers. It will also be useful to single parents, stepfathers, children in blended families, and the relatives and friends of stepfamilies. Researchers and professionals who work with children and families will also find this book of interest.
