New Age Business: Community Corporations that Work

(by Greg MacLeod, 1986, 96 pp., #148, $20.00)

The author takes us on a journey from Cape Breton, to Eastern Quebec, and to the Basque area in Northern Spain. We find great differences in history, culture and language, yet there is a common thread: each area suffered from underdevelopment and responded by forming new structures for economic development. Their objective was community improvement through the use of modern business methods.

The three case studies highlighted in this book are business enterprises. They are not one-shot, make-work efforts, but long-term development strategies. Each community development corporation is autonomous and self-sustaining; each uses modern business methods; and most importantly, each enterprise promotes local self-help and development based on the unique history, traditions and resources of its community.
