George Davidson: Social Policy and Public Policy Exemplar

George Davidson cover(by Richard B. Splane, October 2003, approx. 209 pp., #611, $30.00)

This is the biography of an inspiring 20th century leader whose legacy of policy and program development, underscored by strong social values, resonates in Canada to this day. His life and work offer both information and guidance for today’s policy-makers as they struggle to modernize Canada’s social architecture.

Through a lifetime of service, Davidson provided exemplary leadership in social, cultural and public policy-making in Canada. A major focus of this book is on Davidson’s 28-year career in Canada’s public service from 1944 to 1972. And while perhaps best known as President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (1968-1972), Davidson devoted the greater part of his working life to the planning and development of national social programs such as unemployment assistance, family allowances, and old age security – programs which constitute the finest attributes of Canadian life.
