Employment and Social Development in a Changing
Economy
(by David P. Ross, Guy Dauncey and George McRobie, 1986, 86 pp., #135, $10.00)
This publication examines models for local economic
initiatives and their potential to combat high rates of
unemployment. In fact, local community-based
initiatives may offer more opportunities for full
employment than conventional business methods, says
this report.
The first article, by David Ross, provides an overview of
how local economic initiatives differ from conventional
businesses. Using several Canadian examples, he
indicates how local initiatives can be nurtured to play a
greater role in achieving full employment. In the second
article, Guy Dancey outlines the steps taken by a
British network to generate local employment and
greater community self-reliance. The third article, by
George McRobie, demonstrates how large, mass
production techniques can be successfully simplified for
smaller, "human-scale" technological development.
