Deinstitutionalization: Costs and Effects
(by Symposium presenters, 1985, 132 pp., #178, $15.00)
Revised papers presented an invitational symposium of consumers, advocates, researchers, policy-makers and organizations concerned with the deinstitutionalization of physically, mentally or psychiatrically disabled persons. Part One provides an overview of deinstitutionalization issues and concerns from a variety of perspectives. Parts Two and Three deal with the costs and effects of deinstitutionalization respectively. In Part Four, Judith Snow, of the Canadian Association for Community Living, provides a wrap-up and look ahead centred on two basic questions: 1)How can we create and support competent communities, that is, communities which encourage all citizens to participate? 2) How much does it cost to create competence in the community and what can we learn from successful community support programs already in place?
