Vancouver children's advocate wins national award

OTTAWA - Vancouver-based children’s advocate Michael Goldberg has received Canada's Weiler Award, which honours outstanding contributions to social justice and community development. Goldberg will be in Fredericton, New Brunswick to receive the award at the 12th biennial Canadian Social Welfare Policy Conference at the University of New Brunswick on Friday June 17, 2005.

"We are honored to name Michael Goldberg as the 2005 Weiler Award winner, as he represents so well Dick Weiler’s values of co-operation, social inclusiveness and creative response to social needs," says Gweneth Gowanlock, Chair of the Weiler Award Board of Directors.

Well-known in British Columbia for his incisive commentary on social issues, Goldberg is particularly recognized for his work with First Call (www.firstcallbc.org/index.htm), a coalition which works to ensure that all children and youth have the opportunities to fulfill their potential. Goldberg is credited with the sustained leadership which keeps more than twenty coalition partners working together to place children and youth’s issues in the forefront of public debate.

"He is a wonderful leader who builds consensus," says Canadian Council on Social Development President Peter Bleyer. "He brings a reality check and grassroots perspective to all his work, which is what makes it so credible." A strong community organizer, Goldberg has a reputation among his colleagues for moving things forward without taking personal credit.

The Weiler Award, presented every two years, is made possible by the Weiler Award Trust, which was established shortly after the death of noted humanitarian Dick Weiler in 1995.

For details, please see the Weiler Award website, and the website of the Canadian Social Welfare Policy Conference. For further information or to arrange an interview, contact Janet Creery, Communications Officer, at the Canadian Council on Social Development, 236-8977 extension 228.
