In memoriam – Reuben Baetz

One of the CCSD's longest-serving executive directors, Reuben Baetz, died in October at the age of 73 after a lengthy illness. He led the Council from 1963 until 1977, when he entered Ontario politics where he served for 10 years in various capacities.

Writes CCSD executive director David Ross, "It is with sadness that the Council marks Reuben's passing. I knew him well when I worked as one of his program directors in the early 70s during a time of much social policy innovation and excitement. Reuben had just taken the organization through an arduous but highly successful transformation from the Canadian Welfare Council into the modern-day CCSD. He was a great communicator and a man of integrity, intelligence and humour. It was my very good fortune to have worked for him, learned from him and to have grown considerably under his tutelage and by his example. We will miss him."
