News Release: CCSD announces Peggy Taillon’s election as ICSW Regional President
August 13, 2014 – The CCSD is pleased to announce that Peggy Taillon, CCSD’s President and CEO, has been elected as Regional President, North America and Caribbean for the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW).
Established in 1928, the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW) is one of the oldest international non-governmental organizations aimed at promoting social development, social justice and social welfare everywhere in the world.
The CCSD’s involvement with the ICSW dates back to the 1940s, when then CCSD President R.E.G. (Dick) Davis participated in the early post-war meetings and was elected to the executive in 1948. Another CCSD active member in international social justice issues, George Davidson, became the ICSW President in 1954.
“A post World War II CCSD President, Dick Davis, emphasized that Canada’s welfare is inextricably bound up with the welfare of the world at large,” said Peggy Taillon. “Could his insights be more clear and true today? I am honoured to accept this appointment and to serve with my international colleagues at the ICSW, together with my ongoing responsibilities at the CCSD.”
“Our two organizations share roots back to the 1920s” said Dr. Sergei Zelenev, ICSW’s Executive Director, “and I am delighted to welcome Peggy Taillon. I am confident that her experience and wisdom will help in strengthening the role ICSW plays regionally and globally, and raising its profile as connector, convenor and knowledge broker. We will continue to mobilize partners along shared priorities to shape progressive social and economic policies across the global village.”
Upcoming ICSW events include a regional meeting in Jamaica, W.I. in 2015 and an international conference in 2016 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, where Peggy has been invited to deliver an address. If you want to walk fast, walk alone.
If you want to walk far, walk together.
- African proverb
CCSD is a not-for-profit organization that partners and collaborates with all sectors (not-for-profit, philanthropic, government and business) and communities to advance solutions to today’s toughest social challenges. As a neutral, non-partisan, non-governmental and independent organization, the CCSD believes challenges can be solved through a deliberative approach that includes all partners, ensuring the end user is part of framing the issues and the solutions. Simply put, society designed the problem – whether inequality, homelessness, discrimination, climate change, to name a few – but we also have the power to design the solution.
