From Beverly Smith, Anchors and Sails:
I am hoping that you will include studies of unpaid caregiving labor and its value to the economy, the savings it provides the health care system, the costs it runs to individual families and the taxation of those who provide care in their homes, free, to the young, sick, elderly, handicapped or dying. It is my observation that this labor is still taken for granted and that when the state does recognize child care, home care of the sick or palliative care, it still only recognizes paid care by nonfamily members. This focus is therefore only half-recognition of a crucial part of a caring society, and of work done to keep society working.
