Abstract
Collaboration Beyond Consultation: Towards Meaningful Partnerships

Helen Friel, Director of Citizen Engagement with Correctional Service Canada, has undertaken an internship with The Canadian Criminal Justice Association. She will describe various strategies she has used to enhance public awareness, strengthen community support, and co-ordinate multi-stakeholder initiatives. She will share her experiences broadening the organization's membership base, forming strategic alliances, and contributing to the enhancement of the Policy Review Committee structure and effectiveness.
Barbara Hill, Director of Policy Development, John Howard Society of Ontario is completing an internship with the Department of the Solicitor General Canada, working as a senior policy analyst in the corrections Policy Division. She will share her experiences as an analyst assigned to a number of "files" and the insights gained from the interviews she conducted with public servants. Her focus is on identifying opportunities and barriers to meeting the commitments made in the Code of Good Practice in Policy Dialogue and identifying ways to improve the voluntary sector involvement in the public policy process.
Joanne Murray, Executive Director of John Howard Society of Greater Moncton Inc., has been carrying out a fellowship with the Correctional Service of Canada. She will be focusing on one of CSC's guiding principles, "the establishment and maintenance of positive community and family relationships", by
examining the strengths and debilities of the prison visiting program. She will provide a snapshot of existing collaboration between community organizations and government services that support families with loved ones who are incarcerated.
